Kenny's strugglers knock out Rangers

Scottish FA Cup:Former Derry City manager Stephen Kenny hopes yesterday's Scottish FA Cup victory for Dunfermline over Rangers helps to kick-start their season.

But he claims the Scottish Cup triumph does not rank alongside his previous achievements as a manager.

"I wouldn't even put it in my top 10 to be honest," he said.

"It's a one-off result in a cup competition - it's not the same as winning a trophy or being in a situation like we're in just now where we're trying to survive.

"But hopefully, it will galvanise our season."

Kenny was not discouraged by the tough draw that followed their shock win over Rangers.

Minutes after the Pars had completed a 3-2 triumph over the Ibrox side at East End Park, the Fifers were drawn against holders Hearts in the fourth round.

But after going three goals up against the Glasgow side and withstanding a late fightback, Kenny fancies his side's chances in another home tie.

He told Sky Sports: "I'm not too disappointed. We're at home against Hearts.

"There was nothing in the game last week when we lost 1-0. That's another day for us and hopefully we can do well."

Rangers caretaker manager Ian Durrant watched Rangers crash out then told furious fans: "I'm sorry." The Ibrox youth coach took charge of team affairs for the third-round tie in the wake of manager Paul Le Guen's departure after just seven months.

But the former Rangers player did not get the positive reaction he was looking for as his beleaguered players slumped to defeat.

Durrant admits they now need a manager capable of dragging the club back to respectability in the second half of what has been a tumultuous campaign.

That man looks certain to be their former manager Walter Smith after Scottish Football Association chief executive David Taylor confirmed they had received an approach from Rangers for the Scotland manager.

Taylor told BBC Radio Scotland: "We will be having discussions with Walter tomorrow and maybe later in the week.

"There has been some contact with Rangers but at this stage we need to speak to Walter and take matters from there."
