The new kids on the block have entered the F1 arena with about as much hype as that which greeted BAR when they burst into the paddock this time last year. Jaguar, though, are hardly likely to suffer the ignominy of BAR's pointless finish when this season comes to a close in Malaysia in October. With the bottomless resource pit of parent company Ford to dip into, it's only a matter of time before Jaguar begin to scratch at the doors of Ferrari and McLaren and shunt lesser lights like Jordan through the catflap and out into the cold. That isn't likely to happen this year though.

Much has been made of Eddie Irvine's new found freedom from the chains of Ferrari, but at Jaguar the Irishman had found himself beset by a whole new range of problems - mostly centred on the reliability of his new car. Fitness, too, appears to be a problem. Also, doubts also persist about the Irishman's ability to contribute to the set-up away from the influence of Schumacher and Ferrari, but by mid-season Irvine is sure to be with the front runners.

Johnny Herbert (Eng)

1999: 8th. Age: 35. GP starts: 145. Best result: 3 wins (last European GP '99). Best qualifying: 4th

This season is make or break for the Briton as he enters the final year of his contract with Stewart/Jaguar. Last year's end of season performances kept him his drive in the face of hot competition from impressive Stewart tester Luciano Burti but unless he keeps pace with his new team-mate, Herbert's stint in the big time may well come to an end in October.
