U-21 INTERNATIONAL: Italy ... 19 Ireland ... 30Ireland continued their unbeaten record against Italy at under-21 level with a hard fought victory in a physically tough encounter at Viadana.

The Italians produced their best performance in the history of the matches at this level and it took some exceptional defence in the closing 20 minutes to eke out victory.

Irish captain and number eight Stephen Keogh got his side's first try - they won the try count 4-1 - following a 20-metre catch and drive from a lineout.

Outhalf Michael Rainey added a penalty but it was the home side who led 9-8 as the interval loomed.

Ten points in the space of five minutes restored the impetus to Ireland.

Lansdowne flanker Niall Ronan scored the best try of the match. Following good work by Fiach O'Loughlin and John Hearty down the short side, the ball was moved quickly from the ensuing ruck across the back line with Ronan popping up to score in the opposite corner.

Rainey converted having earlier landed a penalty to leave Ireland 18-9 ahead at the interval.

The Italians, who had two players sin-binned, struck back with a converted try to make it 18-16 but the Irish managed a second glut of points from the 52nd to the 57th minutes.

Full back Tommy Bowe crossed for a try and UCC wing Richard Lane grabbed his second in as many matches: Rainey converted the latter before being replaced by Terenure's David McAllister.

The Italians closed the gap with a penalty but the visitors showed their mettle in the final quarter of the game with resolute defence.

The victory represents Ireland's second successive win in this season's under-21 Six Nations, both matches away from home, having beaten Scotland 13-5 last week.
