Uefa Under-19 Championship/Rep of Ireland 1 Portugal 2:The Republic of Ireland's interest in the Under-19 Championship came to an end after defeat to Portugal in Povoa do Varzim yesterday.

Andrien Silva broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when he fired home via a deflection off Shane Lowry. The Irish went 2-0 down in the 20th minute when Andre Carvalhas volleyed home.

Donal McDermott gave Ireland hope when his shot slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Anthony Lopes in the 29th minute.

Manchester City defender Gary Breen was unlucky not to equalise with a 34th-minute header while Irish goalkeeper Shane Redmond denied Silva and Marco Matias before the break.

Hutton had a 62nd-minute free-kick well saved by Lopes then UCD defender Ian Bermingham saw his shot from inside the box parried by Lopes. Ireland's hopes suffered a blow when Charlton midfielder Harry Arter was dismissed for a foul on Carvalhas. Hutton wasted a chance to level in the 89th minute when he failed to connect just yards from goal.
