European Champions – Inter Milan : 1964, 1965. Manchester United : 1968, 1999, 2008.

European Champions – Inter Milan: 1964, 1965. Manchester United: 1968, 1999, 2008.

The gaffers– Jose Mourinho (46) and Alex Ferguson (67).

When last we met– United beat Inter 3-1 on aggregate at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League in 1999 when they went on to win the trophy.

Two goals from Dwight Yorke in the first leg at Old Trafford sent United to the San Siro in good shape, but they needed a Paul Scholes equaliser two minutes from time to settle nervy tummies after Nicola Ventola’s goal had brought Inter back into the tie. From the starting line-ups in both legs only United’s Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville and Inter’s Javier Zanetti remain at the clubs.

We meet again: Jose Mourinho (Porto and Chelsea) and Alex Ferguson have met 12 times, and Ferguson has only got the better of the Portuguese upstart once (if you exclude that 2007 Community Shield victory on penalties, after a 1-1 draw, which we do).

No love lost: Jose Mourinho v Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mourinho on Ronaldo: "A kid made some statements not showing maturity and respect. Maybe it's his education, difficult childhood, no education, maybe it is the consequence of that." (2007)

Ronaldo on Mourinho: "He always has to say something to gain attention, especially when he is not happy with the work of his players. He never recognises when he is wrong." (2007)

Mourinho on Ronaldo: "Ronaldo is a good player, but he is not the best in the world. He deserved the Ballon d'Or this year because his club side won the Champions League, the Premier League and he scored many goals . . . but . . . then I think of how a player should be, I think of Kaka, Ibrahimovic and Messi, not Ronaldo." (2008)

Ronaldo on Mourinho: "I respect everybody's opinion, but the trophies that count are in my home." (2008)
