Injuries dog Tyrone in run-up to Armagh clash

SEÁN CAVANAGH is set to miss Tyrone’s Ulster SFC opener against Armagh on Saturday week after suffering a shoulder injury during a club game yesterday.

Cavanagh was playing for Moy against Derrytresk when he sustained the injury. He had to have surgery on his shoulder late last year after suffering a detached tendon during a weight training session in preparation for the International Rules series.

His absence would be a huge blow to the Red Hands, as they have already lost a host of attackers through injury, including Kyle Coney, Ronan O’Neill and Tommy McGuigan.

Rory Kavanagh is in a race against time to be fit for Donegal’s Ulster quarter-final with Derry after sustaining an ankle injury yesterday.

Kavanagh twisted awkwardly and was forced off in the early stages of St Eunan’s All-County League game against Ardara.

The midfielder received extensive treatment to his left ankle and was assessed in Letterkenny General Hospital yesterday evening.

He is to undergo a scan to determine the seriousness of the injury, but the early diagnosis was that he had suffered ligament damage.

It leaves him a serious doubt for Donegal’s June 16th meeting with Derry in Ballybofey.

Wicklow will have to wait to find out who they will meet in the 2012 Christy Ring Cup final after Down and London couldn’t be separated in their semi-final.

Twice Down came from behind to grind out a draw in an exciting and closely fought match in Páirc Esler Newry on Saturday.

A 1-21 to 1-21 draw was most satisfying to Down, who had to play most of the second half of the opening 70 minutes without star forward Paul Braniff, who received a red card five minutes into the half.

However, two minutes into added time Down centre back Conor Woods fired a 35-metre free to the London net to send the game to extra-time.

In extra-time, Michael Turley became Down’s saviour with a brilliant long-range pointed free to send both teams to Ruislip for the replay next Saturday.

Wicklow are in the final for the second year running after beating Meath, 3-17 to 2-12, in their semi-final match at Arklow on Saturday.

Twelve months ago Wicklow were beaten by Kerry in the final by 13 points and will be hoping defeat in one final will be followed by a resounding win in the next.

It was the lethal strike force of corner forward Andy O’Brien and full forward Jonathan ‘Bosco’ O’Neill which sank 14-man Meath; the two players racked up 1-14 between them.
