Humphreys tries fryhalf

David Humphreys' talent extends far beyond the playing pitch

David Humphreys' talent extends far beyond the playing pitch. Ulster's outhalf conjured another sublime performance last Friday night in guiding the province into the semi-finals of the Celtic League, contributing 28 points in the 38-29 victory over Neath at Ravenhill. It seems, though, he boasts a little flair outside of his rugby ability.

Humphreys featured alongside top chef Paul Rankin (a star of Ready, Steady Cook and owner of one of the best restaurants in Ireland, North or South) in preparing a three-course meal for guests. The format of the series is that Rankin pops along to the house of an Ulster celebrity and cajoles them into helping to prepare the meal.

The Irish outhalf initially looked a little sceptical, probably because among the guests waiting in the dining room to cast a critical eye over his labours were Ulster captain and flanker Andy Ward and former Ireland and Ulster centre Mark McCall, the latter now the assistant coach to Alan Solomons.

The boy done well but it's probably fair to say it is his service on the pitch rather than his culinary skills that will ultimately prove the more appetising to his guests.
