The 25-year-old from Galve is on the 10-under-par mark of 134 and lies a shot clear of Italy's Marco Bernardini, who went round in 68, and Jean Hugo (69) from South Africa.

Order of Merit leader David Higgins, who started the day one stroke off the lead, slipped to a level-par 72 for 138 and joint 10th place.

David Creamer upstaged all the big names when he fired a new course record of 66 in the first round of the Energis Senior Masters over the Edinburgh course at Wentworth.
