Tammie Green fired a final round seven-under-par 65 to win the Corning Classic LPGA event by seven strokes over Brandie Burton and Emilee Klein in New York on Sunday.
The 38-year-old, who shot a 66 on Saturday to overtake Burton and gain a two-shot lead, finished with a 72-hole total of 268, 20under-par.
That broke the tournament record of 272 set by Patty Sheehan in 1972 and equalled by Patti Rizzo in 1985 and Ayako Okamoto in 1989. It was Green's seventh win in a dozen years on the LPGA tour.
"I thought if I got off to a good start I would have good momentum going," said Green, who did not have a bogey on her final 35 holes. "Once I got everything going, everything seemed to fall into place."
Sweden's Helen Alfredsson, who was chasing her third victory of the year, started the day four shots back but faded with a 72 and ended up in a five-way tie for fifth at 279 with Sherri Steinhauer, Gail Graham, Mardi Lunn, and Dottie Pepper. Penny Hammel shot a finalround 67 to finish fourth.
Mark James, favourite to be Europe's next Ryder Cup captain, has once again decided not to enter next month's US Open in San Francisco.
"I just don't like the courses there," said James, who qualified for a place by finishing 14th on last season's European Order of Merit.
James has played only two US Opens in his 22-year tour career, missing the halfway cut both at Medinah in 1990 and Oakland Hills two years ago.
His five appearances in the United States PGA have also seen the 44-year-old make an early exit each time. He has never played the Masters at Augusta.
