Good news for Zoeller managers

First the bad US Open news for the 65 managers who spent £2.5 million of their budget on Bill Glasson - he won't be there. Not that this will come as a major surprise, seeing as he has only completed two tournaments in the 15 weeks of the competition.

Glasson missed the cut at the Masters in week six and tied for fifth at the BellSouth Classic a month later and now the elbow injury that has plagued him all season has forced him to withdraw from the US Open - he has been replaced by Perry Moss, who we haven't heard of either.

Better news for managers of Fuzzy Zoeller, the 1984 US Open champion and Jeff Sluman, the 1988 PGA champion - they were among the final 25 qualifiers in last week's sectional qualifying for the Open. Other Golf Masters' players to make it to San Francisco, via the sectional qualifying route, were Frank Lickliter, Mike Brisky, Clarence Rose and Phil Tataurangi.

In all, 87 of the players on our list will be in action at the Olympic Club, including two of the "most hired" players in the competition, Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke, who are amongst 16 members of the European Tour to qualify for the US Open.

Our top two teams, Augusta Special and Bargain Basement, both have Darren Clarke, Jose Maria Olazabal, Thomas Bjorn and John Huston in the field in San Francisco, but Kevin Barry will further extend his lead over the Murnaghan brothers so long as Paul Azinger isn't troubled again by his back problem.

The top score in week 16 of last year's competition was £432,500, won by John Sheehan's DJ Hearts. There's every chance, though, that that figure could be topped this time around because, unlike last year, we also have a European tournament in this week's schedule.
