Séamus Power cards bogey-free round before play suspended in Canada

Shane Lowry and Graeme McDowell were both under par with one hole to play

Southport’s Tommy Fleetwood birdied the final hole of his delayed first round to sit three shots behind leader Robert Garrigus at the RBC Canadian Open.

The Englishman was one of a number of players to return at 7am local time on Friday to complete their opening 18 holes after play was ended prematurely on Thursday because of thunderstorms in Oakville, Ontario.

Graeme McDowell was the best of the Irish after making a birdie on his final hole – the only hole he had to complete on Friday morning – to card an opening round of 67 for five under par and a share of 10th. Séamus Power made four birdies on his way to a bogey-free round of 68 which left him in a tie for 22nd at four under par while Shane Lowry – who has his brother Alan as his caddie this week for the first time – was tied 63rd at two under par.

Fleetwood was five under through 16 holes, becoming the first player on the PGA Tour this season to register three eagles in one round, when the suspension came, but he was able to pick up another shot at the par-five last to move into a share of sixth.

That group included compatriot Ian Poulter, who signed for a 66 at Glen Abbey before the weather came in.

However, it was a quick turnaround for Fleetwood who was due out for his second round at 8.20am local time.

Garrigus led by one after the end of the first round following a bogey-free 63 which included five successive birdies from the second hole.
