Draw against England will see Ireland’s women retain senior title

Visitors thump the hosts Wales 6-2 at Maesdu, Llandudno to set up a mouth-watering clash

Defending champions Ireland will face England in a winner-takes-all clash for the women’s Home International title at Maesdu, Llandudno, today after thumping hosts Wales 6-2. They now face England who dispatched Scotland 6½-1½.

Suzanne Corcoran and Laura Webb were once again in fine form in the morning foursomes, racking up a clinical 6 and 4 win over Wales’ Janet Doleman and Chris Harries, while the duo of Sheena McElroy and Carol Wickham backed up that performance with a second victory for their team to see the visitors take a 2-1 lead into the afternoon’s singles session.

Former Irish senior champion McElroy also got Ireland off to a superb start in the singles, claiming a 7and 5 victory over Patricia Fernon, while former Irish amateur champion Webb wrapped up a convincing 6 and 5 win over Christine Harries.

Wins for Wickham and Gertie McMullen completed the one-sided affair against Jane Rees and Janet Doleman respectively. The only blemish on the card was Corcoran’s 2 and 1 loss to Ann Lewis.
