Brandt Snedeker stands firm going into Monday finish

Brandt Snedeker defied the poor weather to claim the clubhouse lead in the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torey Pines which was carried over until Monday.

Snedeker shot a three under par 69 despite raging wind and occasional rain in California as the weather finally forced some players into a Monday return to action.

One of those players returning on Monday will be Paul Dunne after he struggled to one over for the tournament after 16 holes.

Dunne was six over for his final round at the suspension of play while Shane Lowry managed to finish his tournament on level par.

But it was Snedeker who claimed the clubhouse lead on six under but that was still one behind fellow American Jimmy Walker who was seven under with eight holes of his final round still to play when the weather forced a halt to proceedings for the day on Sunday.

Snedeker admitted he did not expect to play the course in three under par considering the conditions.

He said: “Luckily my attitude was fantastic all day. I wasn’t playing great but I made a couple of putts around the turn and that kind of got me going.

“It was one of those special days. I don’t think I could go out there and recreate it and do it again. I’m really glad I did it and glad it’s over with.”

Asked about his prospects of holding on to the lead on Monday, Snedeker told the PGA Tour website: “I’ve had crazy stuff happen here before so hopefully I can have it happen again.”

Snedeker is the only player in contention who has finished his final round and is joined on six under by South Korea’s KJ Choi who still has 10 holes to play.

American Kevin Streelman and Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson are on five under, one stroke ahead of American JB Holmes.

Scotland’s Martin Laird is on two under with five to play.
