A round-up of other golf news in brief

• HOME INTERNATIONALS:Ireland began their challenge for a first amateur Home International title for five years with a stunning victory over Scotland at Muirfield yesterday.

And it was the three players chosen for next month's Eisenhower Trophy World Team championships in Adelaide who were the key figures in the outstanding, 9½-5½ success.

Jonathan Caldwell, Paul Cutler and Shane Lowry won both their matches on the opening day of this round-robin tournament.

Clandeboye's Caldwell and Cutler from Portstewart lined up together in the foursomes and always had their noses in front of Gavin Dear and Paul O'Hara, being one up after 11 holes and going on to win by 2 and 1, while Lowry and Ireland Boys captain Alan Dunbar were too good for Scott Henry and Steven McEwan and recorded an excellent 4 and 2 success.

Then, in the singles, Cutler, who collected six points out of six to help Ireland retain their European team title in Turin in July, produced a brilliant display to defeat Scottish strokeplay champion Wallace Booth 2 and 1.

Booth, who picked up maximum points as Britain and Ireland retained the St Andrews Trophy at the weekend, went into the match as favourite, but the brilliant Cutler got off to a flyer and was four up after 11 holes. Booth fought back, but found the gap too great and lost by 2 and 1.

Lowry, from Esker Hills, was in great form in overwhelming Keir McNicoll by 5 and 4, while Caldwell edged home on the last against Glenn Campbell.

Dunbar was an instant success on his debut by adding to the foursomes triumph with a two hole singles success over Steven McEwan.

Ireland laid the foundations for their opening day triumph by winning four of the foursomes and halving the other. The Scots found there was no way back from that substantial deficit.

In the other first-day battle, reigning champions England recovered from being 3-2 down after the foursomes to beat Wales 8½-6½.

Today Ireland face Wales and England play Scotland.
