GAELIC GAMES NEWS: DUBLIN'S MANAGEMENT committee yesterday confirmed football manager Pat Gilroy had had his appointment extended by a further year to 2011.

The Vincent’s man whose first season in charge yielded a fifth successive Leinster title but also a humiliating 17-point defeat by eventual champions Kerry in the All-Ireland quarter-finals, outlined his plans to the recent county committee meeting and received unanimous support from delegates.

David Hickey, meanwhile, has become the latest member of Kevin Heffernan’s 1970s team to become involved with the county seniors, as he has been appointed a selector to replace Paul Nugent, who has stepped down for business reasons.

The death has taken place at the age of 90 of Cork hurling legend Din Joe Buckley. One of three brothers to represent the county, he was the last surviving member of the team that won four successive All-Irelands in 1941-44 – a feat only equalled last month by Kilkenny. The sad news comes less than nine months after the passing of his brother Connie “Sonny” Buckley in January.
