Concerns ease over knee injury to Donegal’s Neil McGee

Donegal’s concerns about All Star full back Neil McGee have eased a little and although he is to undergo a scan on his knee injury this morning, an X-ray has revealed that there are no broken bones.

McGee suffered dislocation of his knee cap in Sunday’s defeat by Mayo in Castlebar and although the bone was replaced there were fears that there might have been further damage.

"Neil had an X-ray on the knee on Sunday night," Donegal assistant manager Rory Gallagher revealed to The Irish Times last night, "and that revealed that there had been no fracture of the knee cap, which had been feared.

“He is getting an MRI scan in the morning (today) to see if there has been any ligament damage.”

Assuming the scan reveals no complications the player, an integral part of the county's success in the past two years, is still expected to miss out on the next couple of weeks, which will rule him out of the important final AFL fixture against Dublin the weekend after next, but should allow him make a full return for the county's first defence of its Ulster title against Tyrone at the end of May.

Increased anxieties
Were anything further to befall McGee it would increase anxieties for the management with centre back Karl Lacey, the 2012 Footballer of the year, who is only due back in very light training shortly after missing the league with a groin injury.

Donegal need points from the Dublin fixture to make sure that they stay in Division One next season.

Meanwhile, the GAA have confirmed that the Antrim-Meath AFL Division Three clash will take place next Sunday in Casement Park at 1.15 as the curtain raiser for the AHL Division One B encounter between Antrim and Offaly.
