Luis Figo scored a late winner to give the holders Real Madrid a 3-2 European Champions League win over Lazio to mean they are virtually assured of making the quarter-finals.

Figo scored from a free-kick in the 89th minute, earned when goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi was booked for dissent.

Madrid now have three wins out of three to easily lead Group D. Hernan Crespo, the world's second most expensive player after Figo, put Lazio into the lead after four minutes, but Fernando Morientes equalised for Madrid just after the half-hour.

A nerve-jangling final 10 minutes saw Ivan Helguera score in the 82nd minute only for Guerino Gottardi to equalise for Lazio two minutes later.

Bayern Munich beat Spartak 1-0 in the Munich Olympic stadium thanks to a goal by Brazilian Giovane Elber in the 79th minute. Bayern dominated but wasted several opportunities until Elber scored. Their best chance before the goal came in the 32nd minute when an effort by Elber from the edge of the box hit the right hand upright and bounced across goal to safety.

Defending tightly and relying on counter-attacks, Spartak threatened in the 37th minute with a spectacular overhead kick by Uzbekistan international Jafar Irismetov which almost surprised Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.

On a black note for Munich, who have seven points from three games to lead Group C, the booking of midfield general Jens Jeremies for a foul on Igor Titov means he misses the next match.
