Erratic Rennie upsets Wolves

Wolverhampton 1 Bolton Wanderers 2: After a run of seven games without a victory, relegation bound Wolves are going quietly, in contrast to their manager Dave Jones.

A man renowned for his sober approach rather than one of fire and brimstone rhetoric, Jones was almost apoplectic following an erratic display by the referee, Uriah Rennie.

The Sheffield official left the pitch to a cacophony of abuse after refusing to award Wolves two deserved penalties and delivering a performance reeking of self-indulgence.

"He's arrogant in the way he behaves," fumed Jones. "He's there to referee the game in a manner that's acceptable and I don't think he did that.

"I'm not blaming him for the predicament we are in or the goals we conceded, but we should have had two penalties. I'm not a vengeful man but I can be vindictive and he was crap."

Jones will nevertheless continue to support the charity golf days organised by Rennie who, by way of atonement, could do worse than stage one to help the Wolves manager pay the inevitable fine that the Football Association will impose on him for his uncharacteristic outburst.

The rot, as far as Jones was concerned, began in the second minute when Rennie refused to penalise Stelios for upending the goal-bound Mark Kennedy. He turned another blind eye when Emerson Thome grabbed a handful of Kenny Miller's shirt.

Despite all this, Wolves fans will also be asking themselves how their team would have fared this season had Henri Camara been played in his favoured striker's role more often.

The Senegalese international's spectacular, right-footed shot from 20 yards into the roof of the Bolton net, which cancelled out Henrik Pedersen's headed opener, was his fourth goal in as many games, all coming since Jones has deployed him as an out-an-out striker.

It is doubtful Camara could have compensated for the deficiencies shown by the Wolves defence, particularly when Pedersen put Bolton ahead, and also when Kevin Davies struck in stoppage time to guarantee Bolton's survival.

"That's six away wins now and it's because of them we are still in the Premiership," said Bolton's manager, Sam Allardyce.
