Paolo Di Canio, the Sheffield Wednesday striker, is set to issue an apology for his assault on referee Paul Alcock - and then throw himself at the mercy of the Football Association.

The FA have confirmed they are to slap a gross misconduct charge on Di Canio, who has already been indefinitely suspended by the club, once they receive Alcock's report on the game.

The Italian will be hauled before an FA disciplinary commission which have wide-ranging powers of authority - he could be banned for at least six months, or even be thrown out of the English game altogether.

Agent Matteo Roggi, who with his father Moreno represent Di Canio said: "At the moment my father and I are deciding what to do. We will first let the dust settle on what has happened over the next few days.

"I feel sure Paolo will decide to issue an apology shortly and we will then have to see what happens after that. We are also waiting to hear from Sheffield Wednesday."
