OLYMPIC Council of Ireland officials yesterday confirmed that Marian Madine (Belfast) and Earl McCarthy (Dublin) have been added to the swimming squad for Atlanta in the summer.

The majority of team selections for Atlanta have yet to be made but in ratifying Madine and McCarthy, a spokesman for the council said that it was designed to assist them in their preparation.

Following a meeting of the council at the weekend, Shay McDonald of the Irish Gymnastics Association has been chosen to replace David Balbirnie who resigned as chef de mission last month after a rift with the council president, Pat Hickey. McDonald will now be assisted by Peadar Casey of the Irish Amateur Rowing Union who takes over from Brendan O'Connell.

Dr Joe Cuinmiskey, assisted by Dr Conor O'Brien will head the medical team while the team of physiotherapists includes AnneMarie Grant (Dublin), Phyl Dolan (Limerick) and Gerard Hartman (Limerick). David Guiney has again been appointed press attache.
