LEAGUE OF IRELAND:CORK CITY will return to the High Court this morning having apparently avoided financial disaster by paying the Revenue Commissioners all of the remaining money they owed prior to yesterday's 4.30pm deadline.

The club issued a statement yesterday afternoon saying they had met all of its outstanding obligations to the Revenue and adding that they would elaborate on their position now “in due course”.

The payment was required to avoid the implementation of a winding-up order granted to the Revenue but then stayed by Ms Justice Mary Laffoy last week.

The two sides agreed on Friday that if the balance of the €439,000 debt was discharged by yesterday then they would jointly request that the order be set aside this morning.

City’s longer-term prospects of survival still appear to hinge on owner Tom Coughlan’s ability to restructure the club’s cost base, with its wage bill a particular problem, and generate additional income.

Talks with players’ representatives are due to resume today but PFAI general secretary Stephen McGuinness yesterday welcomed a commitment from Coughlan to pay some portion of the wages owed to his members by close of business today.

Negotiations on the players’ terms could take place, he said, once the balance of back money was provided.

THE FAI announced yesterday that this year’s EA Sports League Cup final will be held at the RSC in Waterford on September 26th with the kick-off time to be confirmed later.

It will be the first time the final has been staged in Waterford and the club’s first appearance at this stage in the competition since they beat Finn Harps 2-1 in the 1985 decider.

United beat UCD 3-1 on Tuesday night to reach this year’s final while Bohemians beat Sligo Rovers 4-2 after extra-time the previous evening.

In addition to taking the prize money on offer, the winners will qualify for next season’s Setanta Sports Cup.
