CORK CITY boosted their hopes of a place in next season’s Uefa Europa League last night when they defeated an injury-hit Derry side at Turner’s Cross to overtake the visitors for third place.

With Cork supporters continuing to air their grievances at chairman Tom Coughlan, the game was played in front of a disappointing crowd of 1,745 on a wet night on Leeside.

The opening goal came via the penalty spot in the 19th minute. Guntars Silagailis was fouled by James McLean and Faz Kuduzovic finished from the spot-kick.

Cork doubled their lead five minutes later when Kuduzovic turned provider. He drilled the ball across the face of Gerard Doherty’s goal and former Derry winger Billy Dennehy tucked it home.
