CAMOGIE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP:CORK EXTINGUISHED Tipperary's hopes of making the All-Ireland senior semi-finals with a hard-fought victory over the Premier girls at the Cork Institute of Technology's grounds on Saturday.
The Leesiders cemented their own place in the last four alongside champions Wexford, Kilkenny and Galway thanks to their 0-13 to 1-7 win.
They had 10 separate scorers, with Jennifer O’Leary leading the way on three points. Joanne Casey and Katrina Mackey added a pair apiece and though Jill Horan hit four points and Cora Hennessy goaled for Tipperary, they could never get their noses in front to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
Wexford continued their improved form of late with a 3-19 to 1-9 victory over Offaly at Wexford Park. Una Leacy struck the first of her two goals in the 10th minute. It took Offaly until the 21st minute to get off the mark through an Elaine Dermody free. Katrina Parrock’s injury-time goal was a massive blow though as the hosts led 2-7 to 0-4 at the interval.
Siobhán Flannery pounced for a goal for Offaly but Parrock, Kate Kelly, Lenny Holohan and Ursula Jacob all tagged on scores for Wexford before Leacy bagged her second goal late on.
Galway edged out Kilkenny 0-12 to 0-9 in an entertaining tie in Ballinasloe. Inspired by centre-back Therese Maher, Galway led 0-9 to 0-4 at half time. Brenda Hanney’s two points gave them a good start and though Kilkenny’s Anne Dalton hit three of her four points in response, four points towards the end of the opening period put Galway in control. Aoife Neary, and Denise Gaule reduced the deficit to one but Sandra Tannian’s point settled Galway nerves.
Goals from Clare Fiona Lafferty, Naomi Carroll and Deirdre Murphy and five points from Claire McMahon helped Clare to a 3-10 to 1-8 win over Dublin. Despite Amy Murphy’s first half goal, Dublin trailed by 2-8 to 1-5 at the interval. Aisling Carolan hit four points for Dublin.
