Connacht Council looking into football final incidents

GAELIC GAMES NEWS:THE CONNACHT Council have initiated disciplinary procedures over the events immediately after the province's club football final between St Brigid's and Corofin in Kiltoom on November 20th.

Roscommon’s St Brigid’s won 0-11 to 0-10, but Mayo referee Liam Devenney and his umpires were surrounded after the full-time whistle. It required stewards and Shane Curran, the St Brigid’s coach and former Roscommon goalkeeper, to escort the officials off the field.

Devenney has submitted his report, but no charges have been made by the disciplinary committee. However, representatives from Corofin were called before Wednesday’s investigation, while video evidence of a reported assault on match officials was also examined.

“We haven’t finalised our deliberations yet,” said Connacht Council secretary John Prenty. “We initiated the investigation. There will be a full council meeting tonight and the disciplinary body will report their findings to them.”

Prenty was unable to confirm if Corofin club or individuals were being investigated. “We looked at the video and had people in from Corofin. When or if we make charges we’ll inform you then. We are still gathering information. We hope to finalise it tonight, but we won’t, I guarantee that.”

Meanwhile, St Brendan’s, Birr defeated Castlecomer CS, 2-15 to 1-15, after extra-time yesterday in the Leinster Colleges SH A League semi-final.
