Cole achieves Newbury double

PAUL COLE returned from the Keeneland yearling sales to reach 50 for the season with a double at Newbury yesterday.

The Whatcombe trainer, who flew back with six to add to next year's string, secured wins with Cinema Paradiso and Green Perfume.

Cole saddled his 24th two year old winner of the season when Cinema Paradiso, the stable's second string, took the Ecchinswell Maiden Stakes.

But Green Perfume produced the best performance to lower the seven and a half furlongs track record, held since 1993 by Inchinor, and land the Watermill Conditions Stakes.

Richard Quinn expertly judged the pace to make all the running and deny Everglades by a neck. Rated the fourth best two year old in Europe two years ago, Green Perfume had a disappointing 1995 but has bounced back to form and is now ready to step back into Group company.

"He was going for the Beeswing Stakes but after two quick races, giving a lot of weight away today, he might wait for the Hungerford Stakes back here on August 16th," said Cole.

Cinema Paradiso, owned by Chris Wright, soon to become owner of Queens Park Rangers football club and Wasps rugby club, enjoyed the benefit of the stands' rail to beat odds on Jawhari by two and a half lengths under Michael Hills.
