Cobh fall as Rockmount roll on

Rockmount continue to provide the shocks in the National League Cup

Rockmount continue to provide the shocks in the National League Cup. The Munster Senior League side, which beat Cork City in the first round on penalties, last night knocked out Cobh Ramblers 1-0 after extra-time in a second-round match to reach the quarterfinals.

It all went horribly wrong for the National League First Division leaders during a three minute spell in the first-half of extra-time at St Colman's Park.

Midfielder Pat Keane was sent off on 97 minutes for dissent, his second bookable offence, and a minute later Rockmount's Thomas Long scored from close range.

Within a minute, Cobh's Liam O'Connor, guilty of missing their best chance 10 minutes from the end of normal time, was also red carded for a second yellow card. Drogheda United took another Dublin scalp as they advanced to the quarter-finals when coming from behind to beat Shelbourne 21 at United Park.

Tommy Byrne had given Shelbourne a deserved lead when sending a rebound through a crowded penalty area to the net in the 22nd minute but Drogheda came right back into the game after the interval and levelled on 72 minutes.

A long-range shot from captain Greg O'Dowd was uncharacteristically spilled by Shelbourne goalkeeper, Steve Williams, and Derek Thronton shot home. John Butler then won it for Drogheda four minutes from time when Alan Murphy got to the end line to cross and Butler finished with a shot from eight yards.
