Ian Chivers of the Cyprus Club in Belfast was out on his own in the Liam Toolin memorial race, the last of 10 events in the Callcard Classic League, at Ballyboughal yesterday and although Raymond Clarke did not finish he was the overall league winner with 61 points.

The Emerald promotion was over nine laps of a circuit of just over nine miles and at the end Chivers was two minutes and nine seconds clear of a group of five led in by David Peelo. This put Peelo second in the league competition with 56 points with Chivers next on 45.

Before halfway Chivers, Brendan Doherty, Neil Teggart and Alan Buckley broke away and were joined by Peelo but then Chivers went on alone, chased by Peelo. At the bell for the last lap Chivers was 2:15 ahead of Peelo who had been joined by Nigel Forde, Shane Baker, Paul Butler and Buckley.

Thirty-year-old Chivers pressed on strongly to win, after 36 miles out on his own, with Peelo best in the sprint for second place.
