Kingspan Breffni Park will host the first International Rules match to be held in Ulster since the series was revived in the 1990s.

The GAA has confirmed that Ireland will take on Australia at the Cavan venue on October 19th. The second Test will take place at Croke Park a week later.

Meanwhile, in the Allianz Football League Division Two, Armagh rallied from 11 points down to rescue a point – 3-8 each – against Wexford in their Division Two match on Saturday night. Wexford scored three goals in the opening 21 minutes and Armagh faced humiliation in the Athletic Grounds.

Paul Grimley’s decision not to ask Crossmaglen duo Jamie Clarke and Aaron Kernan to play some part in this game was looking like a bad call with half an hour gone. But three goals from substitute Gavin McParland, plus an equalising point in the third minute of injury time from fellow sub Stefan Campbell, rescued the home side.

“He (McParland) showed me up for not starting him, but I don’t mind that,” admitted Grimley. “Sometimes the bench is the managers best friend.”

It was confirmed at the weekend, that one of the most famous number 15 jerseys in Armagh is being placed back on the peg. Oisín McConville has confirmed that he is retiring from club football after two decades of loyal service to his beloved Crossmaglen Rangers.

The legendary corner forward, who guided the club to an unprecedented six All-Ireland club championship victories, said the time has come for him to hang up his boots to give some of the club’s promising young players their chance to shine.

The 37-year-old corner forward, one of the most decorated club players of all time, said he intends to continue his involvement in the game in a coaching capacity but his immediate priority was to spend more time with his family.

In the other football game on Saturday, home comforts proved crucial as Louth cruised to a commanding – 0-17 to 0-11 – victory over Galway in Drogheda. With two rounds belatedly out of the way, only table-toppers Westmeath have managed to rack up an away win, and even that was an edgy one-point success over bottom side Longford.

It was a second-half surge that secured Aidan O’Rourke his first league win as a manager, as his side made little of the testing conditions to rattle off an impressive 17-point haul.
