Bohemians go through

Bohemians... 2 UCD..

Bohemians ... 2 UCD ... 0 Goals in either half from Paul Keegan and Mark Rutherford booked Bohemians' passage through to the last eight of the competition but UCD were left feeling aggrieved by referee Declan Hanney's handling of the game.

The Dublin official sent off College midfielder Alan McNally and also awarded Bohemians a dubious penalty in a disappointing game at Dalymount Park.

The curious refereeing by Hanney provided the highlights from very early on in the game. Bohemians were first to suffer after just three minutes when Glen Crowe was clearly impeded as his shirt was pulled by Tony McDonnell as he succeeded only in getting in a tame shot that Barry Ryan easily held.

Hanney evened the scores within a minute by not giving UCD a penalty when John Martin's cross was deflected out for a corner by the arm of Bohemians' right-back O'Connor.

Last year's beaten finalists had two further shouts for a penalty waved away, while Damien Lynch shot their first real chance over the crossbar before they deservedly took the lead on 29 minutes.

Tony O'Connor's first-time centre found the head of Keegan who directed the ball into the corner of the net despite Barry Ryan getting a hand to it.

Eight minutes into the second half UCD midfielder McNally was sent off for a foul on Simon Webb - his second booking.

UCD's ire was further stoked on 70 minutes when Hanney did award a penalty after Keegan and Clive Delaney went into a challenge on the edge of the area. Justice was done when Ryan dived the right way to make a brilliant save. Bohemians finally killed off the game 10 minutes later when Crowe got free down the inside right channel to cross for Rutherford to side-foot past Ryan.
