On the 72nd green at Southern Hills in June, Stewart Cink missed an 18-inch putt which would have got him into a play-off with Retief Goosen and Mark Brooks, for the US Open. As it happened, Cink thought he needed to hole his first putt of 15 feet to qualify for sudden death.
And by finishing out, he simply intended to leave the stage to Goosen, only for the South African to miss from not much further away. "I put all my emotions and energy into the first putt," said the American afterwards. "I didn't think the second putt meant anything." He added: "But I can handle this. It's just a game. I can handle it."
