Race-fixing investigation: Trainer Alan Berry was arrested yesterday along with jockey Paul Bradley and farrier Steve O'Sullivan in the latest move in the police investigation into allegations of race-fixing in Britain.

It is understood they are being questioned by City of London Police, who are in charge of the inquiry, on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud.

They were detained at the trainer's Moss Side stables at Cockerham, near Lancaster, at around 7 a.m. yesterday. It brings the total number of arrests in the case to 25.

Sixteen people, including former champion jockey Kieren Fallon, were arrested and later bailed in September. A further six people were arrested and bailed in October. Also in September, Berry, Bradley and O'Sullivan were cleared by the Jockey Club of conspiracy to defraud over the running and riding of Hillside Girl at Carlisle in June 2003.

The 22 people who have previously been detained during the investigation are all on police bail and due to return to police stations next April. Among those are Fallon, fellow jockeys Fergal Lynch and Darren Williams and trainer Karl Burke.

During the investigation, more than 130 police officers have previously raided 19 addresses across Suffolk, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Hertfordshire.

Police are analysing more than 1,000 exhibits, including 59 phones and several computers. The inquiry is examining allegations of fixing involving more than 80 races over the last two years.

Berry (41), is the son of high-profile former trainer Jack Berry and took over the reins from his father at the Cockerham yard in January 2000.
