Grange golfer Sandra Smyth, an 18-handicapper, travels to Vale de Lobo in Portugal's Algarve on Saturday week thanks to a marvellous round of golf at Roscrea recently. Sandra won the Captain's Prize at her home club to qualify for the competition in Roscrea and she played superb golf with nines of 25 points and 23 for a total of 48 over the tough Munster course.

"I actually played to six on the day, it was just one of those days when everything worked," a delighted Sandra said. She had one birdie, 10 pars and one double bogey in her round to finish four ahead of her nearest rival Mary Moloney (Portumna), with former Wexford camogie star Mary Dinan (Island) one shot further back. Five ladies women and five men qualified for the final in Portugal, but the scores from the fair sex women were much more impressive. Indeed the lady woman who finished fifth scored 41 points, which was two more than the top man.
