Within 24 hours of Michelle de Bruin's withdrawal from Ireland's team for next month's World swimming championships in Perth, the IASA selectors have called up New Ross teenager Hugh O'Connor to fill the vacancy.

Backstroker O'Connor , whose brother Adrian is already in the party, has established himself as Ireland's most successful Irish junior competitor. He won gold at the Youth Olympics in Holland and later was placed fourth in the 100 metres backstroke at the European junior championships in Vienna three seasons ago.

His inclusion gives the New Ross club an unprecedented monopoly of places, with national coach Ger Doyle bringing their representation to three.
