A two-year-old Kerry boy, who underwent pioneering brain surgery to help him overcome the fatal Batten disease, arrived back in Ireland from New York yesterday accompanied by his parents – a week earlier than expected, writes Anne Lucey.

The rare disorder of the genetic system claimed the life of Liam Heffernan’s only sibling, Saoirse (5), earlier this year. Liam’s grandfather, Michael Carey, from Kenmare, said the family was delighted.

The toddler from Keel, Co Kerry, underwent the surgery on May 4th.
