Sir, – Donald Trump’s unsolicited remark on Brigitte Macron’s appearance (“You’re in such good shape”) unfortunately underscores again the sense of entitlement of many men to comment freely on, and openly judge, a woman’s physical appearance. Those who dismiss the subsequent fuss over Mr Trump’s remark may wish to imagine whether a female world leader such as German chancellor Angela Merkel would be likely to comment publicly and patronisingly on the physical appearance of other political leaders’ male partners.
