Madam, - I am unable to locate the March 2007 Pro-Life Campaign poll referred to by Dr Ruth Cullen (October 3rd) and therefore I cannot address her claim that it asked a more "nuanced" question on abortion than the recent Irish Timespoll.

I can, however, point out that her main argument - that the Irish people actually oppose abortion in all cases except to save the woman's life - is directly contradicted by the results of the TNS/MRBI poll of June 2007, commissioned by Safe and Legal in Ireland (see http://safeandlegal.blogspot.com). This found majorities in favour of legal abortion in the cases of rape, incest, threat to the woman's life, severe foetal deformity or inability of the foetus to live outside the womb.

Did the Pro-Life Campaign poll ask such "nuanced" questions? If not, why not? - Yours, etc,
