Madam, - Rarely has my blood boiled as when I read in The Irish Times of Mary Harney's cancellation of the cervical cancer screening programme for 12-year-olds and subsequently listened to her attempting to defend the decision on Morning Ireland.

I have always admired Mary Harney's integrity and I expect an early capitulation on this issue.

Perhaps we need to be very clear here. Barack Obama says: "Yes, we can".

Madam, - Last May an Irish businessman who made his fortune on the back of the Celtic Tiger stepped in with an extra €1 million so that Ireland could afford a new football manager. Is there not some philanthropic person or group who would be prepared to step in and cover the relatively paltry cost of €10 million to implement the cervical cancer vaccine programme that the Government says it can no longer afford? - Yours, etc,
