Sir, – As a Christian I believe myself to be a member of “a chosen race, a royal priesthood” - proclaimed to be such by the first pope.
May I greet his successor in the risen Lord’s own words “Peace be with you; do not be afraid”.
Perhaps the advice of the first-century Jewish teacher, Gamaliel, set out in Acts 5 is relevant: “If this enterprise, this movement of theirs is of human origin it will break up of its own accord; but if it does in fact come from God you will not only be unable to destroy them but you will find yourself fighting against God”.

Sir, – Have the bishops of Ireland been silenced also? Is that why they have not spoken to the 77 per cent (Lost Sheep)? Maybe they, are too busy penning in the 23 per cent (Saved) without the usual helpers (The Association of Catholic Priests).
They could also have been sent away to monasteries in order to pray and reflect! This letter might be considered “funny” were the situation not so serious. – Yours, etc,
