Vanishing Gaelteacht

Sir, – It would be best by far if these Gaeltacht areas vanished once and for all. They are a hindrance to the development of the Irish language, as are indeed all state-sponsored initiatives. Whether Irish survives and prospers or succumbs is something that will be decided by the will of the Irish people, and by no other means. A key factor in this is the acid test; can it urbanise?

Any language which becomes metropolitan and sophisticated will do well; any language which is confined to rural ghettos will go nowhere.

– Yours, etc,

JOHN CULLY
