Madam, – As a member of the teaching profession I wholeheartedly agree with Anne Taylor (October 5th) regarding her disgust at the closure of schools for polling days.

I recently returned from a weekend in Germany prior to the re-election of Angela Merkel and I was informed by our hosts that every poll, whether local, national, European or referendum, takes place on a Sunday. This means no teaching time is lost, no primary children have to be inconveniently minded at home and most people are free from work and find it easier to vote. – Yours, etc,
