Madam, - When I wrote to the Taoiseach recently complimenting him on his mastery of our native tongue, I didn't mean the muttered focal picked up by the Dáil microphone.

What I thought unbecoming in his interjection is that it was spoken not merely in the presence of, but actually to, a lady. However, your sketch-writer Marie O'Halloran claims that the Tánaiste is "not unfamiliar herself with colourful language". If that is what she is used to hearing in the upper echelons of F****a F**l, I suppose we must overlook her chief's lapse, and let the cause of civilised discourse in public life go by the board. - Yours, etc,
