Tuning in to Europe

A chara, – In 1973 we joined the EEC, not the USA

A chara, – In 1973 we joined the EEC, not the USA. Since then the amount of European cinema, language programmes or even drama on our television screens is so low as to make us almost forget we have been in the European Union for so long.

Those with cable television do have access to a range of European channels, but this is not much use if you do not speak the language and it is not subtitled.

I am not against American programmes, but if the Irish stations made more of an effort to broadcast European films, programming and language-learning series, we would be able to better appreciate the culture of our fellow EU members, and realise that these places are not so “foreign” after all. – Is mise,
