Madam, - I refer to your golfing correspondent Colin Byrne's whingefest on behalf of the "Private Jet Brigade" most of whom failed to master the Oakmont course at the recent American Open .

As a golf fan for over 50 years I and many others revelled in the challenge of course versus player. We found it both riveting and exciting, unlike the birdie fest we see every week as these same players assault easy courses, old courses and out-of- date courses with space age technology which great course architects like James Braid, Eddie Hackett, Donald Ross etc never envisaged.

Perhaps it's a case of those who dish it out can't take it. Where now stands Christy O'Connor Senior's incredible round of 73 in a gale-lashed Portmarnock in 1973. . . the greatest ever display of ball control and technique. . . ask Bob Torrance. - Yours, etc,
