Madam, – Another eulogy to our hard-working president, stating that she has the support of almost everyone in the country (Michael Lee, December 3rd). Well, the letter-writer is not speaking for me.
Some of us have two serious problems with the President. First, she is from the FF stable of wasters and already is being used by some of them to re-legitimise the party. Second, and critically relevant is that she leads the political class for gross overpayment in public life. It starts from the top. Can anyone explain in simple English or even Irish why we ever paid our President more than Obama?
If she is serious regarding serving the best interest of the nation – a gesture of reducing her salary by say 50 per cent might be a start. Perhaps she could donate the difference to a trust fund in her name (we could all contribute to it) to be used for job creation and nothing else. If it prevents one child of one family from emigrating, it’ll be well worth it. And it could lead to a change if budding politicians follow.
Then again, maybe she and her friends in government and political life still don’t have to comply with a rule of economics – your employer can’t pay more than he can afford because if he does someone else goes hungry. – Yours, etc,
