The value of centenaries

Sir, – Am I the only one who is feeling a bit uneasy regarding all these centenaries currently being observed? They are mostly concerned with the glorification of violent and needless death and violence imposed by human beings on other human beings. The rights and wrongs don’t seem to be subject to any criticism.

If one’s relations were in the general vicinity of the GPO, the Somme or Gallipoli, preferably being wounded, this is being touted as being a “good thing”. What should be primarily regraded as a horrendous warning to present and future generations is being glorified and celebrated by all sides, fuelled by “blood sacrifice” apologists.

And the sad thing is we have still another six years of this horror. Yours, etc,

JOHN ROGERS,
