Sir, - In his deeply-felt piece (The Irish Times, January 13th) the Bishop of Limerick, Dr Donal Murray, protests the diminution of the individual conscience and the triumph of majority will in today's society.

Pardon me while I do a doubletake!

I grew up in Limerick in the 1950s and 1960s under some of Bishop Murray's predecessors. I did not sense then any particular encouragement to express my individual conscience, nor was I left in any doubt but that the majority was in full control of the truth. But, of course, times change. And the Church changes. Oh, how it changes. But perhaps when the Bishop of Limerick next speaks out about individual conscience, he might preface his remarks with a little apology for times past. - Yours, etc.,
