Madam, - I believe we should now find time to debate the need for a reduction in the term of office for both the government and the presidency. A reduction would not, in my opinion, prejudice the effectiveness of either. I suggest that our governments should be mandated for a period of four years and the term of office of the presidency be reduced to five years. There needs to be a more frequent involvement of the people and this can only be good for our democracy.
It would be interesting to have the views of the political parties and independent TDs on this matter . - Yours, etc,
