Teachers' Pay Demands

Sir, - Anne Walsh (May 1st) is correct in all she says about teachers, their working year, etc. But her comments are irrelevant, If good people will not go into teaching because the pay is inadequate, we, as taxpayers, have a choice: either pay up and get the best or try and get our children educated on the cheap - which, in the long term, is a recipe for disaster.

If accountants, financiers and lawyers would pay themselves rises in step with national wage agreements, rather than with what they are able to extract from whoever it is that pays them, we would not be having this problem. - Yours, etc., Patrick Davey,
