Sir, - Every day we open our newspapers to the same horrific beat: murder, mayhem, child abuse, strikes, litter, grid lock and chaos. Today, for the first time in months, I closed my paper with a smile.

Didn't anyone ever tell Daniel O' Donnell that he's supposed to spit and swear and tear up the place? That if he's going to make a gesture to his fans, he must do it at a busy intersection in a metropolis with heavy security and full international media coverage? Apparently not.

It was a pleasure to read the too-short account of this entertainer's tea party (The Irish Times, August 4th). One can only wish him well. Of course, he has two great advantages: he's from Donegal and he loves his Mammy. - Yours, etc.,
