Sir, - Listening to John Bruton's recent speech I was struck by a gloomy thought (are there any other?) If the IRA declare a ceasefire Sinn Fe in may be allowed to take part in the negotiations. If this happens, the unionists will take as their first task the harassing of Sinn Fein until they are forced to withdraw. If Sinn Fein are forced out the IRA will feel it incumbent upon them since the forcing out was done by Ulster politicians, to mark the occasion by publicly breaking their ceasefire in Northern Ireland.

I suppose it is too late to suggest no elections, no forum, no negotiations - and no violence? - Yours, etc
